I was finally away from home and "on my own" .... or so I thought - and in the Tuskegee University marching and concert bands. I was a Crimson Piper! I'd made it past the auditions and the pledge period and I was in! It was one of the best and most fun years of my life. The other favorite year is the year jazz discovered me. I was performing in a local jazz festival in Washington D.C. and competing for a scholarship. While at the venue over that weekend, I had my first experience of feeling directly connected to God through having performed and bathed in jazz music and the jazz musicians culture. Everything and everyone looked and felt so 'hip'. I remember getting down on my knees the evening after everything was over and thanking God for bringing me to the place that I was supposed to be. I just kept saying "Thank You! Thank You!" over and over again. Favorite Sounds: Hearing my mother sing my name when she calls me - there is such joy in her being. Hearing the sounds of Silence. Children giggling. Favorite Sights: Seeing a new snowfall cover everything and bury it in silence. Watching my mother laugh and have a good time. A clear day.
